The project assisted the newly formed National Agricultural Research Institute of PNG (NARI) to develop the capacity to identify farmer needs, prioritise responses, achieve cost-effective results and communicate these to stakeholders. This contributed to the Goal of an enhanced well-being of PNG food producers through improved productivity, product quality and market-place competitiveness, brought about by the delivery of high quality agricultural research results. Five Institutional and Technical Support Components-The project had five institutional and technical support components, backed up by a sixth component of project management. The components were: 1. Effective organisation, management and communication systems for NARI; 2. Strengthened networks and relevant linkages among stakeholders operating in the food supply system, providing NARI with the capacity to respond efficiently to food sector opportunities; 3. Strengthened NARI capacity to deliver high quality agricultural research outputs through effective research projects of high priority, executed cost effectively by well trained staff with the necessary funding, equipment and infrastructure; 4. A developed process to determine infrastructure and equipment needs, matched to program planning, and assistance with the provision of these needs; 5. Relevant information from NARI research and information about smallholder food crop and livestock production communicated to producers, researchers and other stakeholder, and an improved capacity for libraries to provide for the information needs of Scientists; and 6. An effective project management system providing information and control for all project activities. Project Beneficiaries The project beneficiaries are the rural-based PNG population, which relies on subsistence and semi-commercial agriculture for food and income. Women play a dominant role in food production and were prime beneficiaries. The Project promoted sustainable agricultural systems while meeting the ongoing need for further intensification of production. Hence the environmental impact was positive. |
